PhoneSoft FAQ
Subject:Size of Voice Recordings
Category:Unified MailCall

PhoneSoft supports many different voice formats. The smallest (most compact format) now take only 1KB per second.

The most commonly used PhoneSoft format is 8K per second WAV files. If we assume an average message is 20 seconds, and worst case (without comression) is 8KB per second, then the average message takes up 160KB.

If we use the smallest drive you can buy (1 GB), it will hold 6,250 voice messages (or 2083 minutes or 35 hours of voice recording).

PhoneSoft also supports different industry standard sample rates and ADPCM compression which can reduce the file size to 3KB per second, which would store 2.7 times as many messages on the same disk. We no longer recommend using this compression, since there are advantages to using standard WAV files which can be played back on any desktop or across the Internet using any sound player on any operating system client.
