PhoneSoft FAQ
Subject:Voice ports - how many ports are needed?
Category:MailCall, Software Development Kit (SDK), Unified MailCall

SummaryLike most telephone applications our products are sold on a per-port basis (unlimited users). In other words, a single port does not limit the number of callers or system users. For instance, a single port allows anyone in the world to call into the system, so long as they called in one at a time. Likewise anyone in your company could call in and hear their messages. The number of "ports" purchased defines the number of simultaneous phone calls the system can answer. Multiple ports are purchased to support the number of simultaneous phone calls. Voice mail systems are therefore purchased by the number of simultaneous phone calls the company is likely to receive.

Please contact us if you would like help in determining the number of ports your company requires.

Unified MailCallUnified Messaging, Voice Mail, Email Reader & Auto-Attendant

For example, a company of 150 employees may require an 8 port Unified MailCall system. In general, the number of ports required is the same as your current voice mail system. A Text-To-Speech (TTS) engine is included. A single resource of TTS can generally support 4 ports of Unified MailCall.

MailCallEmail Reader

For example, a company of 400 employees may require a 8 port MailCall system. A Text-To-Speech (TTS) engine is included. A single resource of TTS can generally support 2 ports of MailCall.

Telephony Software Development Kit (SDK)Add telephony access to any Lotus Notes application. The Development kit allows you to develop your own telephone integrated applications for Lotus Notes.

The PhoneSoft SDK is used to develop your telephone application. The SDK includes two internal run-time licenses to allow development and testing of your application. When you are ready to deploy your application for production use, you must purchase Run-Time licenses to match the number of simultaneous phone calls your application requires.

For example, if you application is required to handle 8 simultaneous phone calls, you need to purchase 8 Run-Time licenses for the production PC.

Note that most SDK applications do NOT require Text to Speech (TTS). Any SDK application can play numbers, letters, dates, and dollar amounts without requiring TTS. Most applications will have prerecorded prompts and menu options and therefore do not require TTS. Applications such as e-mail readers which cannot know ahead of time what text will be played DO require TTS. TTS can be supplied if needed and can support several simultaneous phone lines.

If the customer will be using an application developed by PhoneSoft or a PhoneSoft Reseller (who already owns the SDK), the customer does not need a copy of the SDK, and would simply purchase Run-Time License ports. In other words, the customer does not need to purchase the SDK unless they will be developing or modifying the telephony application themselves.
